Windows or Linux server hosting? Ultimate debate

Depends on the use-case. For a majority of cases, Linux is the way to go, since a ton of services are built with Linux as a first-class citizen in mind like Apache and nginx.

Windows is good for things where Linux doesn't shine, like enterprise setups or apps that need to be managed with a GUI.

Technically, they are relatively platform-agnostic as long as POSIX is partially supported.

.NET core won't build Vim for Windows.
But it can definitely take platform independent things to Linux. And for developers that's more than enough. Vim, nano, emacs are irrelevant things in grand scheme of things.

Based on security reports.

Systems are not a security measurement unless you know how to configure them. And if you do, there is no system that is more secure than any other system.
