I ran across someone using this PunBB the other day. Thought I would see if anyone here had used it or knew anything about its background. It looks to be a pretty clean board.

It's a very nice forum system. It only add's the most usefull features and tries not to become bloated.

I have been looking over it all morning (installing, setting up test users, mods, etc), and from what I have seen I really like it.

I just wonder what kind of pain it would be to get it all modded out to suit, then have to upgrade to later versions.

It wouldn't be all that hard, you'd just have to manually do it (using hdiffs or by using the .patch file).
And that's why Rickard is adding an extension system in 1.3, so that modding becomes easier to do and clutters less

PunBB is a nice minimalistic board. It's quick and gets the job done without all the bloat :)

I like punBB too, it's very quick, avoids the bloat of phpBB, and works well even in large communities.

Easily modded, it comes with only the essentials and allows you to add on extra features as either plugins or mods.

I use it on http://uprc.magnapc.co.uk/ and I am a mod on http://technowax.net/, a larger community, which is a great example of how the system can be modded, to produce a system which is simplistic, effective, and attractive.
