There are plenty of folks here that are successfully running VB5. So I am sure that someone will chime in and give you an idea of the Host they are using...

Have you spoken to your hosting company again, letting them know what BirdOPrey5 concluded to be the problem? It is an issue with their server configuration, so I think demanding a refund from them would be your best option. If they cannot fix their problem, that is who I would have the beef with.

I've been there and it sucks. I hope you get it all reolved.

I cant stress enough how critical it is that I am able to hand off the technical support and trust that the thing will run properly 24/7.
In the dark days of Xenforo (lawsuit and developer personal issues) ... Jake Bunce and a few faithful customers ran xenforo.com for months and months. (dont remember how long). Mike and Kier were gone. Brogan left. Only Jake Bunce was around. And believe it or not .... essentially one guy supported *thousands* of forums.

I must thank you all for your interest and help.

As I said above, the solution is a more integrated hosting/software/support package.
Can anyone else suggest anything/anyhost?

I am leaning toward xenforo. (aiming for 100,000 users after 12 months).

Once the forum is bringing in some money I can start hiring someone but up to that point, the host or software support will have to be trusted to handle it, even if dedicated support is paid for on an ad hoc basis up to that point.
If integrated hosting/software/support package is what you're looking for, then Xenforo is not what you need. Seems like you're ready to throw away $ for the best option, if so, then IPB enterprise package is your best option, or one of the enterprise offering from Vanilla, NodeBB or Discourse.

Xenforo is self hosted but it does have a large cult-like followers so you can easily find a sys admin that will maintain the technical aspects for you.

Thousands? Documentation for that?
One could ask the same for Vbulletin's claim it powers more than 100,000 sites
Or proof that it's the most powerful community software and most powerful forum software. ;)

One could. but it still wouldn't answer my question.

There's no need for documentation, most of us were there and can for want of a better term, bear witness to it. When software just works there's very little need for ticketed, server level support. It's a concept you may not be too familiar with :D

You could see how many sites were crawled by the spam bot. (forget the name).

Use Xenforo and Kayako
https://support.kayako.com/
I think there is some login integration between the two.

If you want real help ... outline exactly what you want.
Forums are relatively crude tools.

Do you need articles ?
SEO important ?
What exactly is you niche ?

Yes, articles are fundamental.
I actually want to create an e-zine from the forum. Users will be able to upvote potential articles.
The whole forum revolves around this idea.
This could be done without anything special really, just linking to external and internal material.
Still, it would be interesting to know if there are pre existing forum applications or synergies between forum software and other apps.

Yea, i will be moving away from them but its only £40 for the year and hosting the forum is not all they provide.
Still, I think i did ask before I engaged them. Shame really because they have been very good other than this issue.

XenPorta 2 (can create articles from threads easily). DEMO: http://8wayrun.com/
Use this for "article voting".

IPB? 'Invision Power Board'? This looks very good. I like the document file sharing capability, thats cool, and subscription-based access would be good too, I was wondering how I would be able to handle the organisation for thousands of members subscriptions via nothing more than an exported paypal list.
Could do with more info on this, i will have chat to them.

Do you have personal experience of running this kind of board? How does the usual forum functionality compare? What about the little voting mod that Digital Doctor mentioned for xenforo?

Spose I should also ask if you are an associate of the company.
Can you recoment a specialist webhost for this software?

Thanks
