someone wants to sell me their license, but wants me to change the information myself?

is that even possible? i thought you absolutely had to go through the transfer process with vbulletin to get the contact and registration information changed on the license. is that something i could do just through the member area? i just want to make sure before i continue the conversation with the seller.... doesn't sound like a good idea to me, though.

I wouldn’t recommend that approach. That means they have to give you their login info, then you change the associated contact details. Definitely steer clear of that approach.

that's what i thought... but it is definitely possible then?

i mean, the truth is most people have to rely on the seller to actually initiate the transfer anyway, just in the case, you're relying on the information. once you pay anyone, they can dissapear on you i guess... still doesn't sound like the greatest idea, but i thought i would ask.

It’s possible to be caught and both users lose access to the license.

So I’m assuming the seller doesn’t want to pay the transfer fee?

So, I'm going to be 100% honest with you and everyone here. I have done this. Against the rules of a certain forum software. This is actually how I got into "foruming" and what got me here today. I had done development work for one of me clients. When it came time to pay me, he didn't have money. So, he gave me his login information to the forum software he bought as a forum of payment.

I took it. At that time I had no idea it was against their rules because I was young and completely new to the forum world...

Now, with that being said. I'm not going to sit here telling you what you should do through the internet. But, what i suggest is that you weight the pros and cons. Is it worth be banned over not paying 40 or so dollars? The people who make these softwares put in a lot of time and effort into making the software what it is.

Take someone like Ryan Ashbrook for example. He works on IPB. (applaud) I love the software, thus, the cost involved is high lol But, its worth the cost as these people put in their time to create such a great software. Just like the people at Xenforo or any other paid software for that matter.

If it was me in your shoes. I would pay for the transfer. Not for the right way of doing things, but for the respect of the developers and support staff that make it all possible... Good luck on your decision and I hope it works out!

The short answer is it isn't possible, not with a vBulletin account. You can't change the account information and nor can the seller. Only vBulletin staff can do it.

Have you been given a reason why are you having to pay a transfer fee? Are you the original owner?

There is no transfer fee on the first transfer of a VB3 or VB4 license, period, then end.

Thank you for that honest and really well-written response. I mean, I basically agree. I think vBulletins license transfer charges are unreasonable, but I've always paid for them. When this seller told me to do it this way, I had questioned myself as to whether I'd been missing something all of this time. Thank you!

Thank you so much Zappa! I thought it might not be possible, but thank you for confirming it. You've been so helpful this whole time that I've been here. I really appreciate it. :)

Also, as he posted here, he said we could pay half and half on the license... I'm waiting for another seller right now, though, so I'll have to think about it, but I'm glad the seller had a change of heart about the transfer fee.

It's supposedly a vbulletin 4 suite and 5 suite license, so I assume the transfer fee is from the 5 license. Although, I was really looking for just the 4 license right now.

told before that everybody can edit license (domain) with login info - and used this license (custumer nummber) on one domain - should be that domain exemple1.com or exemple2.com - is not problem for vbulletin - one license - one domain - that is point and legal on all sides.

Something could be alarming for the staff.
In a short while:
email address changed
password changed
domain changed

You could loose the right to use the license and the buyer could loose the right to use the software.

Got answer from vbulletin support

Hello,

Thank you for contacting vBulletin Sales.

All license transfers incur a $45 fee.

Please provide the requested information below when you are ready to begin.

===========

In order to transfer your license we first need to verify that you are the proper license holder. Please respond to this ticket with the following information so that we can verify this request:

- Your customer number

- The authorization code generated when you enter your password into this page: http://members.vbulletin.com/authcode.php

- The answer to the security question:

In what town was your first job?

If you don't know the customer number or password, you can request either to be sent to your email address using this form:

http://www.vbulletin.com/members/lostpw.php

Also please provide the following information from the purchase of this license:

- Your full name

- Email address

- Billing address

- Telephone number

- Approximate date of purchase

- Type of license

- Order Method (Credit Card, Paypal, etc)

If it was a PayPal order, please include the order and item IDs from the original purchase.

In order to transfer the license we require to have the following details of the new party:

- Full name

- Full Address

- Country

- Telephone number

- Billing address

- Valid and working Email address

Before transferring the license, we will email the prospective new owner the details of the license. Once we receive confirmation from them, the license transfer will occur. They will be emailed with their new customer number and password.

Because of a large amount of fraud relating to license transfers, we have a policy regarding the transfer of vBulletin licenses. The policy states states that each license can only be transferred one time. Once it is transferred, it cannot be transferred again which means the new owner will not be able to transfer this license in the future. In addition, leased licenses are not eligible for transfer.

You can read this policy under the license agreement here: http://www.vbulletin.com/order/license_agreement.php

We sincerely regret that this policy may cause difficulties, but it is necessary to protect our interests - and those of our existing and prospective customers.

Please note that once you have transferred your license you are no longer allowed to run your own instance and are required to remove the files from your server. Also note that once a license is transferred, the transfer CANNOT be rescinded. If the buyer or transferee later charges back this purchase there is nothing we can do. Make absolutely sure you want to do this.

I have read it from the beginning:
someone wants to sell me their license, but wants me to change the information myself?
That would not be a simple domain change.

read few more times
Reading it again:
First you wanted to save the transfer fee fully.
The buyer had some doubts so opened this thread.
Secondly you wanted to pay only half of it.
Only thirdly came up with the proper way: contacting vB that you want to sell your license.

oh, so the vbulletin 4 he mentioned was as in part of the suite included with vbulletin 5?
Yes, it's actually a vB5 Connect license.

So, you would have access to the vB3, vB4, and vB5 downloads as well. And to my knowledge there is a transfer fee when transferring a vB5 license.
