Considering that beta 4 is just what is currently on GitHub and not formally released yet... good luck with that.
Historically, it was never officially supported but the software did it. Guess something changed in the last couple of years - when I was dev team, we were pretty careful to ensure that the upgrader would still work correctly to get you to the current version, regardless of where you were currently at.
