Good blog post here from Wordfence, a WordPress security plugin about the pros and cons of allowing automatic updates of plugins and how the feature works in WP.
It's definitely a decision that needs to be made on a plugin by plugin basis. I'm glad they're giving the option to enable it selectively per plugin.
The new ACP integration of a plugin marketplace for IPS should probably monitor this to see how it pans out. In the meantime I hope one day we can get a proper 3rd party plugin repo for XF and notification of updates in the ACP with one click updates.
