Seems like WordPress.com wants to become a more traditional hosting company now...

Since now they've announced that paying members will now get SFTP and database access to their sites hosted there. Anyone with a business or ecommerce plan can now use SFTP to upload their own themes and plugins to their hosted site, and use PHPMyAdmin to edit the database too.

This is sadly still not available for free users, but it's neat to see none the less, and means that those using their hosted services are now far less locked down than they were before. Plus, they can much more easily export their data to take it elsewhere too.

So yeah, what do you think? Could WordPress.com now be a viable option for traditional WordPress hosting, and eat into the marketshare of WP Engine and its ilk?
