Stay away from that coder. Last week I helped out a buddy of mine who had installed several of his add ons and his coding skill leave a lot to be desired. The way that guy is adding the sql queries in his add ons is very amateurish. Now, I am not very familiar with xenforo, but what I have seen in its files all queries are done in the model files. That guy puts them all in the controller public files, which is a very bad practice. My buddy unistalled and deleted all his add ons.

The most significant issue isn't using direct db queries for selects; it is AndyB was bypassing the entire entity system (including "services" system) to modify the database directly, meaning any extendability evaporated. One day I expect we'll see a pile of "using services" updates for add-ons which make changes.
