Haha! I sit very much in the center politically and have seen both left and right wing lunatics. You don't even come close to the level of right-wing lunatic that I've had to deal with on our forum. XD.

There are probably ways to make this work at certain communities. Thread closure/deletion by member voting is probably more workable though.
Our entire community would vote for the ban option because it's just who they are hahaha! Heck, I just voted "Yes":ROFLMAO:

Back on A4 we had that vBulletin rep system. Had to get rid of it because it was driving us nuts. People who didn't take it seriously were spoofing people who did take it seriously and the amount of complaints we got from teen members was unbearable lmao. Then we tried the upvote/downvote addon, where posts that get x number of downvotes to upvotes get collapsed. They downvoted all of one admin's posts lol. He was actually loved by everyone, so just another example of what they are like. Even now, on the new forum, pretty sure they're still the same. People can be very silly.

What makes you so sure? :barefoot:

Yeah, I'm gonna just say that in general it's probably not a great idea. There's a reason why most democratic governments are republics, as opposed to "pure democracies". Letting the mob rule is dangerous. :)

There was a ‘ban of the week’ on one of my favourite old forums.

The mods would make the nominations and the users would vote

I thought it was great and often provided respite from certain members.

On smaller forums like this it might end up being the same member each week though :-D

"Ban of the Week." That's a terrible idea though. I believe that if you're going to ban someone for a time, just do it and don't make a spectical of it. The global ignore feature is so much better than that honestly. There were times when we had a large community that we actually used that to stop a user misbehaving. When they think that no one is interested in what they have to say, they stop being a nuisance. That is, so long as they don't actually realise what you've done. It only works when they're clueless as to why no one cares about their trolling anymore. XD.

We had a blast with it, no one took it too seriously and it was actually made for some quite good community building through gentle ribbing and making fun of various members.

Communities come in an endless variety of flavors and member personalities. What would be a terrible idea on some or even most forums might be reasonable and beneficial for some others.

I prefer to go Russian Roulette style. One member can ask me to ban another. I’ll look at both and ban one of them.
