Keeping up with SEO

I just compiled this in answer to a PM and thought it might be useful to others as well. The question was about good resources for learning about SEO.

I think Aaron Wall's SEOBook is a pretty good basic SEO primer. Aaron is somebody I respect but he has become a little bitter and rabidly anti-Google lately. Bear that in mind... :)

Beyond that, SEO isn't static and to keep up with changes to algorithms and practices here are some blogs that I find interesting and useful:

http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/
http://cre8pc.com/blog
http://www.dailyblogtips.com/
http://google.blogspace.com/
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/
http://www.inspiredseo.com/feed/
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog
http://www.free-seo-news.com/ (from Axandra - also comes as a newsletter)
http://www.searchengineguide.com/searchbrief/
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/
http://www.seroundtable.com/
http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/
http://www.seobook.com/ (Aaron Wall's blog)
http://www.seomoz.org/blog
http://www.ysearchblog.com/

As with anything SEO related, bear in mind that a lot of what you read should be considered speculation, although with most of the sources above I think it's fair to say it is informed speculation. My general advice is to read everything with a critical eye, look for evidence supporting or disconfirming what you read, and always remember that SEO tips that may have worked in 2004 may be ineffective or even detrimental today.

What other sources do you regularly read and recommend to keep current with search engines and SEO?

I would add Searchengineland to the list of websites, the High Rankings forum for networking and advice, and the Daily Search Cast podcast for when you're sick of looking at a screen! Although it's more of search news than tips and tricks, it helps you keep up if SEO's not your day job but you already understand the basics of it.

Hi, I also like the seocompany.ca website. The good point about them is to report the latest exact dates when Google PR updates have taken place.

Hi, I also like the seocompany.ca website. The good point about them is to report the latest exact dates when Google PR updates have taken place.

I have never understood why anyone views that rather obsessive list of previous Toolbar PR updates as useful.

For one thing, toolbar updates are always out of date almost from the moment they occur and any changes visible in Toolbar PR have already been active and factored into Google rankings a minimum of 2-3 weeks prior to the update.

For another, knowing when previous updates occurred tells you nothing at all about when the next one will be.

New to SEO so thanks

I have been looking for such information for long. The blog list for SEO was just great. I had seen one or two of them and l liked what I saw. Can't wait to check all of them out!

I also like sitepoint, they are also very helpful for newbies like me.
