Is a unmoderated forum possible?

As the post following yours observes, more than censoring porn is needed. Hence my thought it requires an AI that can be trained and will learn to spot violence, terrorism etc and perhaps auto snitch to the authorities.

If something like that can be done, I doubt it is going to be cheap.

Vbullitin 4.0 or xenforo, SEO friendly likely the best, do you agree?

I like vB4, but in all honesty, I would not start a new site out on it and look for such a custom mod, XF would be the way to go.

Is it possible to automate protection against spam porn bots etc., and give USERS option of "banning to invisibility" Trolls, so they no longer see USER's threads and posts, but allow the USER to choose to see/not see Troll posts, just in case they want to engage the Troll again.

Fully automate moderation so the board requires little or no human labor?

Spambots, etc --- Nothing is 100% perfect but most spam bots can be blocked automatically these days.

As far as giving the use the ability to choose to see troll posts or not, they can always put another member on ignore.

What are you going to do about illegal content? Cause if someone posts say, illegal porn or terrorism related content, you can't exactly tell the police and legal system to just ignore it...

If Trump is President, no. Obama's FBI already ignores social media. But to your point, I want that automated to, an AI that can spot terrorist posts and alert concerned authorities, while still banning the user. Unmoderated does not express my idea accurately, there would be some moderation to prevent everything you noted, and any violent threats. But I want it automated, allowing debate below that threshold to go uncensored, regardless if it were personal attacks, like Hillary and Trump are doing now.

Xenforo.

USER Identity theft a problem with many variations, so I wouldn't allow user name changes after registration.

Thanks for Xenforo affirmation, that was my guess too.

Now, assuming you go with XF, lets ask Xon1 Snog and Chris D if the type of mod you are looking for is even feasible.

I'd say no considering the huge risk of getting suspended by your host, punished by google's ranking system, or even completely removed due to spam, etc.

User name changes are usually a manual process anyway so there's no add-on needed for that.

So far as automated moderation, XenForo already has that built in to an extent. But so far as a 'learning' AI, I personally wouldn't touch it. I've been approached about that more than once and it's a difficult, almost next to impossible task to make the system know what a simple mention of a word is and what a dangerous use of a word is. So automated moderation is a very iffy thing.

So far as a totally unmoderated forum. I wouldn't do it. One wrong thread or one wrong photo and you'll have the law on your back faster than you can blink an eye.

No....... to many stupid people who will troll and piss people off which will result in a huge loss of clients. Not to mention the spam bots that will take over without proper protection.

I attribute the decline of debate forums to moderation, takes the fun out of it.

As someone that has been running a Christian forum for over a decade, I can say that it is very difficult to operate a Christian forum. You have all levels of Christians from many backgrounds. Half the people will think you are too tough, half will think you let too much stuff go.

Most spam and porn posts will have links. Moderate all posts with links. Then spend a few minutes every day going through the activity stream to see if anything inappropriate has been posted without links.

I think discourse has feature where other members can report and the post becomes invisible.

Yes, an unmoderated forum is possible if you wish for something that is much worse than 4chan. I honestly can't see it going any other way. I don't visit it, but they do have to stay within the law and have moderators to delete questionable stuff.

Also, I do know of an incident where someone from a forum I was on requested for their photo to be removed from 4chan and it was taken down right away. Someone put him on 4chan for lols, which wasn't right, but trolls will be trolls. You can't have a law abiding forum without mods.

I use AI for to block spam, and it is not as simple as switch it on and you're done. The AI needs ongoing training and monitoring, even the best AI messes up and block legitimate users while missing illegitimate ones. You still need a mod at the controls.

Yeah, something worse than this http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/4chan.org and it's value...jeez... not everyone likes the content there, but a LOT of people sure do.

I wouldn't care what people posted on my site if my rank was even close to that.

I know how popular it is. Or rather, even how popular it once was in the early days of the internet :p It depends on what you want Drastic. If you are not running a reputable website and don't give a monkeys what people think of you or your forum, going down the route of a chan site is all well and good. We actually used to have an infraction on our anime forum "This is not 4chan" for people trolling the site. 4chan used to be even worse actually, which is why people still think of it as a cess pool of the internet. They didn't have any rules at one point in time and site attacks were openly planned and discussed by members. Doxxing people was also common.

Anyway, my point was that even they need mods.

Topix is a good example of what happens if you make a forum unmoderated. Topix is a good place to ruin lives and reputations, lol. Need I say more? :p
