Even if they renewed for $1, .design is very specific.

I'd bet the vast majority of people grabbing something "free" have zero legitimate use of a TLD like that.

If you can come up with good ones. Maybe even wait after a year if they drop like this guy did with .io and .ai domains

'Domaining' is a huge problem for startups, as all the good names are gone and just sat on. In the main, good domains are available only at hugely inflated prices. Domainers provide no additional value. The small percentage of domains that domainers actually sell on must sell for high figures to counterbalance the costs of holding all those unsold (and unused) domains. There surely has to be a better way of providing/selling domains, but I have to admit, I am at a loss to think of a practical way to do this. Besides, the genie is already out of the bag. I take the view that although the urge to get into domaining is very understandable, domaining remains a very antisocial activity.
