July 5th marks the release of Flarum 0.1.0-beta.9 code named "Leafy Seadragon".

The release

This release contains several improvements and fixes a vulnerability under the hood. Changes include an upgrade to Laravel components and a full rewrite of how the installer is hooked into the rest of Flarum, amongst others.

We urge you to upgrade as soon as possible. More details on the vulnerability can be found in this advisory.

Some of the changes we would like to emphasise:
  • ️ Tags can now have an icon. Thank you NomisCZ.
  • ✉️ More mail drivers can now be configured in the admin interface.
  • ☑️ Checking MariaDB version and MySQL version now works decently during installation.
  • ⚠️ CSRF attacks allowed attackers to execute actions on behalf of other users. Thanks to CuPcakeN1njA for reporting this.
  • OAuth providers no longer worked.
  • Event posts were included in user post statistics counts.
  • ✏️ Admins could not reset user passwords.
These are just some of the highlights of beta 9. There are tons of other minor features, polish, bug fixes and performance improvements - see the full changelog for all the nitty-gritty!

You can check out the full announcement over at Flarum now by clicking here.

The one sad thing with Flarum is that it has effectively killed FluxBB. If anyone would be interested in a lightweight orthodox forum software, all former contenders - FluxBB, PunBB and Phorum - have now stopped being updated. I am unhappy with that.

Anyway, there's beta 10 now. Do you think you could make this a secret from us? :D
I spent ten minutes browsing around flarum.org, and I found three major problems with its usability:
  • The sidebar that keeps scrolling in and out makes me nervous. And seasick.
  • The font choice (especially its size) does not seem to be working too well on a desktop computer with a sane-sized display attached. It looks really busy to me.
  • I need pagination.
At least the project has not died yet. I wonder why.

I wish Flarum had private forum and membership system. It'd definitely help many people to keep membership levels on the forums.

It is unfortunate that FluxBB's developers abandoned the software in favor of developing Flarum instead, but I guess that is what they want to develop now.

Mostly because people want a PHP Discourse.

I haven't had a chance to post the new announcement! I'll get to it now...

Franz still maintains the software and has mentioned that he isn't willing to let it go entirely yet. Whilst updates are more security patches, he does keep active on the community.
