Although I've never seen these before I'm pretty sure I know what they are used for.

An alcoholic friend got a job as a driver (he didn't last long). Part of his induction was to witness the entire process from beginning to end. He explained it to me in great detail so I'm fairly sure I know where these go and to be honest they are nothing compared to other parts of the process.
i think you know

Ahh, an American thing. Interesting, haven't heard of such a thing before. TIL.

So was the driver friend of zappaDPJ a driver for transporting deceased bodies or what was the connection here?

He drove a hearse, transporting the recently deceased from the funeral home to its final destination. Part of his induction required him to watch bodies being prepared for open casket viewing. Some of the things he described were really gross but he had me in hysterics when it came to explaining the use of duct tape and a mastic gun o_O

They're not just an American thing. I often use them after opening threads started by the likes of fixer et al that I can't bring myself to finish reading.

They work pretty well. It usually takes me a few weeks to recover, but the physical pain behind the eyelid usually outweighs that of having to finish reading the replies to threads that have gone way off topic.

I can actually see these becoming a premium member user upgrade benefit on certain sites. Great idea fixer! :D ;)

We don't see the deceased body at all. It is wrapped in a white cloak some sort of and which is then in a coffin. At no point the coffin is open.
People go to the mosque, pray, then they transport the coffin on the shoulders to the grave, where the body in the cloak gets moved out of the coffin and lowered in to the grave. Then the grave gets filled up with earth again.

So funerals differ from culture to culture.
