Our last interview with Shawn was about 8 months ago, just before he he spent some quality time as a guest of the Federal Government for eBay affiliate fraud. Shawn's out now, so let's see how he held up and what he has planned for the future.

So was stay at Taft Correctional Institution better or worse than you imagined? Did the time pass quickly or slowly? How did you spend your days?

It was pretty fun actually. No responsibilities, everyone (inmates and staff) was super nice, bathrooms/showers were super clean/private and nice, food was great, etc.

Honestly, if I just wanted to be lazy and be taken care of, it would be a great place to live for a longer period of time.

The hardest decision you have to make is along the lines of if you want to play softball or bocce ball. Or maybe you want to play pool so you can watch TV at the same time.

I always made carnitas and fresh guacamole for Charger games. :)


Morganna insisted I ask if you got any tattoos while you were "in the joint"?

Lol... no. And not sure you could find a tattoo parlor there to do it for you anyway. :)


How was the transition back to civilian life?

Same ol'... live in the same house, same car, same everything. Car insurance never was canceled, cable TV and Internet were still working when I got home, cell phone still activated, etc. Transitioning back to civilian life would be about the same compared to if you went on vacation for a couple months somewhere. Time to stop doing nothing and get back to work, because you have stuff to do.


What was the first thing you did when you got back home?

Honestly I don't remember... I think maybe I rewired part of my network at home because I had someone change it when I was gone to route around an issue. Was no longer an issue, so was okay to put network back to normal.


Did things go as planned with Digitalpoint and your servers while you were gone?

Yep... I figured there would be more (or any) issues without anyone monitoring anything or doing anything at the admin-level (server or site). But no real issues. Site just hummed along, no failures of anything (but even if there was, everything is redundant, so wouldn't have mattered). But none of the failover stuff had to kick in....

Well it has to be a Federal Penitentiary, not just any old jail. :)

LOL, it's not that bad, especially in the southern part, lots of good fishing down there.

I'm in the southern part... southern IL is fine and nice but its poor, all the money goes to Chicago it seems. Lots of great fishing holes down here yes. I know of many that tourists have no clue about, too. Lots of good hunting in these parts too.

Yep, I spent many many summers in Carbondale, I used to know it well.

I live in Hurst, about 20 minutes from c'dale. Carbondale has gone to crap though, lots of issues over there - if it wasn't for SIU, the town would be a ghost town. Marion on the other hand is really improving, besides all the road construction.

I don't know why, but I thought Ozzy was Australian.

Shawn, question for you. I had to refresh my memory of the correctional facility, but was what I read about the female guards true, and that some people "escaped" by simply walking to the highway and waiting for their family to pick them up? That the place is more like an honor system center for white collar sentences?

The "real" prisons are what they do the shows on. I'm sure going to a high security penitentiary would be no joke and not a fun place to go. But I was at a camp... no fences, no cells, a full time staff recreation coordinator who plans and coordinates stuff to do (like softball tournaments). It *literally* was like going to summer camp.

While not the greatest picture, I found a picture someone took from the parking lot... https://inmateintake.com/locations/taft-ci-camp.19/ As you can see, there's no fences or anything. It's more like living at a community college than anything.

From what I was told, the female guard thing was true, but it was a few years ago and no longer going on. But people that have been there since then said it was true back then. There were 10 "escapees" while I was there for 5 months (more on that over here). But yeah... you literally could just walk away if you wanted. One guy went to Walmart to get stuff to sell (like cigarettes) and came back when I was there, but he got caught and sent to the SHU in the adjacent low-security facility.

The upside is that maybe I can use this to my advantage. Anytime I don’t want to do something, I’ll just say I can’t do it because there probably is a felon wherever I’m going and I’m not allowed to talk to felons (16% of the male population in the United States are felons). a13411_111.com_wp_includes_images_smilies_icon_smile.gif

Hmm, I remember him from Vbulletin. This was an interesting read :) Though perplexing at the description of the facility a bit.
