We're happy to report that phpBB.com is now powered by phpBB Ascraeus 3.1.0-RC5
icon_e_biggrin.gif

We welcome you to try the many new features phpBB 3.1 has to offer and tell us what you think.

This was a very large overhaul of the website, so certain components are still being caught up.

If you find that something isn't working as it should, you can greatly help us out by
filing an issue in the bug tracker and being as specific as possible.

This is the first of several announcements coming in the next few days, so be sure to check back.

Excitedly yours,

The phpBB Team

Please discuss this announcement in its discussion topic.

I'm sure it's amazing under the hood but why this:

max-width: 850px;

the style is very off putting in 2014. No way should it be the default. Talk about hiding your light under a bushel.

phpBB 3.1 ?

Anyone see a new feature list ? Sure looks the same.
It's been so long since phpBB3 got an update ... it's probably too late.
The first beta of phpBB3 was released in June 2006.

- still no likes
- still no @tags

I would like to see likes and @tags for the next series, if and when they do that.

The features really look great! Big improvements! I really liked the bit about security... no security reports in years even though all the others have had them. That is quite interesting. I may have to check the software out and feature an article on YFB about it :)

I'm really glad to see PhpBB getting back in the game. I started out self-hosting forums with PhpBB version 1, would of hated to see it fade off!

Just a quick comment from me , phpBB.com uses "Special Edition" for it's support board re the links above but 3.1 itself ships with
Prosilver tweaked and now responsive for the newer version .
As for Likes and Tags
Likes are covered by adding an extension , see "thanks for the post" or "share love"
Not everyone wants to see likes so isn't likely to be added as a core feature but available to those who want it.
tags to some extent are covered by Notifications note1.GIF

phpBB2 had something similar. It sat around stagnant for ages until it had a massive update, so expect it to be as it is for roughly another five years.

The default layout of the software has always been too busy and full regardless of fluid or fixed width.

I won't say any thing about phpBB 3.2 / Rhea then ;)
Seriously though the upgrade paths have been changed from earlier versions and the progress from 3.1.0 through to 3.2
should be fairly regular in comparison to 2.0.0 /2.0.23 . 3.0.0 /3.0.12 were .

Please keep in mind that individual features are not as important as the underlying structure. There is no reason to pollute core with niche things that many administrators will opt to disable.

Instead, likes, mentions, and hundreds of other features will soon be available via efficiently-implemented drop-in extensions, some of which are being written and maintained by our Extensions Development Team. This also means that they can be updated independently (more frequently) of the core product.

We are also switching to a semi-fixed release cycle, so the long time periods between major versions will no longer be a problem.

What you see on phpBB.com is not the default style, so that max-width doesn't apply to the default product.

I'm also happy to report that both the default style and are main website are currently being overhauled for the next major release.

Thanks for the feedback everyone :)

I had a bit of a look around and this: http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/IDLaunch_Blue looks so much better and is apparently just a tweaked version of the default (prosilver?) It's not perfect but it's way better.

Good luck with everything.

The new features list looks closer to a version update than your normal "dot" update. I'll be trying it out, it's been a few years since I've used phpBB for anything but I have a project in mind.... :)

Anyone get 3.1 up and running yet, or did the IPB 4.x beta 1 release steal the attention?

I put phpBB 3.1 on a testing site...I'm thinking of making it live, though.
