Did you know Woltlab is actually 2 sites in 1?

Woltlab Burning Board does something sort of interesting and soft of odd and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed that it's actually 2 sites in one. The population there is sort of hidden and there is actually more people and post than you originally think.

I noticed that the numbers were not exactly adding up. More to the point, they were adding up, but I wasn't seeing any new post. And then I started thinking, wait a minute, Woltlab is a German company, where is all the nice people from Germany (or at least who speak German)?

It turns out their language file actually divides their site. If you switch languages, suddenly post that were not there before are and the ones you were just looking at a moment ago, disappear.

While this is cool, it does give the false illusion that nothing is happening, when in fact a lot more is going on than meets the eye. o_O

An interesting approach I like. Works out better to run a single site rather than language-specific offshoots whose size may condemn to inactivity.

Very interesting find, Adam! I too wondered where they got their numbers from. I wonder if this is possible with other platforms. I wonder how they do it.

I'm in agreement, because for sometime I started to think that the place was a "ghost town", but it turns out there is A LOT more going on there than I originally thought (or saw).

Is this feature included in the core (forum software) or have to pay extra for it?

This feature is built-in and works with as many languages as you want, a user can chose which languages should be displayed (or in return filtered out). An administrator can disable this filter-feature entirely.

For a moment, I thought users were separate as well. I'm actually inclined to getting BB now, are there any good custom theme designers for them?

If I were not so deep into xenforo development / migration already, I would setup a dev site with BB as well. My site has a number of sections dedicated to different countries/languages, so this is very appealing. Its silly that other software providers do not consider this.
Its pretty hard to run an international website without multilingual support. The end result is that users will flock to the English forums, while flocking to other websites for discussion in their own language, leaving the language specific forums pretty much dead. It has always been a major issue.
Props to BB for providing a solution!

That's an interesting function, quite clever in fact and unique to Burning Board? A good selling point I would have thought.

oh that is cool. I remember looking on the forums and thinking it was a bit dead but I am glad to see there is definitely more than meets the eye.

Its unique to a forum but not websites in general language selection can be done with the browser. As for forum i made the suggestion to vBulletin in October 2010 to use it with the CMS but this is far better how WBB did it.

How does the software determine in which language to tag a thread, so the filter can find them.

Created content inherits the user's interface language, in addition if you have chosen to display 2 or more languages, you'll be given a choice during creation:

very good, I bought bb4 and try it on my test site. the only problem I met so far is some webserver configuration, it is even faster than xenforo
and design is really nice
