2.) what are the cons of the chatbox?

3.) what do you think about forumotion in general?

This is really something better suited for the Forumotion support site. There aren't too many people here using sites like Forumotion. Also, please don't bump your post after 3 hours. Be patient.

1. & 2. I don't know why you'd want to install anything else to communicate. Believe me, adding chatboxes, chatrooms and any other form of communication to a site with a forum takes activity away from the forum. If you want an active forum then chances are that you'd be better off without any form of chatbox/chatroom/etc.

3. If you're planning on starting a serious site then I really wouldn't suggest using any free forum host. Also if you intend to move away from them and get actual hosting at some point then I wouldn't suggest using them. As far as I know Forumotion won't give you your forum's database, so choosing them means you're either stuck with them for life or will need to start again from scratch at some point.

oh, do you know that support site?

The majority of large forums do not use chatboxes. They're certainly not necessary to generate activity. One caveat I would like to mention, however, is that you're going to have difficulty generating activity at all if you use a site like Forumotion. I don't think I've ever seen a successful forum which was hosted on a free forum provider; if there are some then they're few and far between.

You need more than a domain to run your own forum. I know one forum that has its own domain and everything but is still running on Forumotion (http://www.christianhardmusic.com). You will be much better off purchasing a domain and good webhosting and using software such as SMF, phpBB, etc. - not only will you have more control, but you will also have a lot more flexibility.

Madden-School.com is probably the most successful forumotion forum of all time.

WOW!
Who makes money off that forum. Forumotion, or the ones who run madden-school?

I love seeing super-successful forums running off of free software!

I would generally stay far away from free hosts. Hosting is dirt cheap, as are domain names.

I talked to the owner, he spends hundreds a month removing the google adsense ads forumotion puts in by default, so I think forumotion is.

I would HIGHLY recommend that serious forum owners choose to go with their own hosting and have full control of the data and the forum platform of choice.

You can choose a free forum script like phpBB, SMF, MyBB, YaBB or any other platform to keep down costs, but don't go with the free hosting services: they usually will not provide you with the data when you want to leave. I've seen a lot of threads on TAZ which have people tearing their hair out trying to retrieve their valuable forum content and user base.

Use free hosts as a "trial" and switch to a proper host when you want to build a serious community.
