The issue with Windows 10 is that you can't renew the inner workings of the software because of backwards compatibility. Now with Windows 11 they can change a lot, but i think its time to wave goodbye to backward compatibility just start from 0.

Linus Tech tips did a video a few days ago about it, as there's been a pre release leaked copy of it, he does some game tests on it, it's basically Windows 10 with a few tweaks, so I don't know why they're bothering to release yet another edition of Windows.

It makes some sense to me if they are going to charge for it. I wouldn't have thought Windows as a service which is how I view Windows 10 to be sustainable in the long term. There's no renewal charge for updates and if there were a charge it would present a hacker's paradise with millions of unprotected Windows devices attached to the net.

With the sale of new PCs in perpetual decline it makes sense to market a new version. If on the other hand it's offered as a free update, I agree, why bother.

Not quite thrilled by what I'm seeing. Its win8 remastered all over.
Good thing linux is viable now that many uses that were native experiences became web services or websites, and all you need is a working browser to retain your workflows.

With the sale of new PCs in perpetual decline it makes sense to market a new version.

Computers are so powerful compared to mobiles that the average machine can last a lot longer - they are no gadgets and the reason sales 'slow' is because the additional computing devices people have been getting in the last decade were mobiles and tablets that they didnt have yet. I dont think new windows releases could change that.
Being too forceful in certification processes will chase OEMs away into selling linux and even chromebooks instead.

Conjecture on my part, but I think it might have to do with saturation of the phone market, which has been roughly flat for 4 years. Seems as people add secondary devices they're gravitating towards as tablets and PCs, both of which have growing markets.

I've heard for two decades that Linux is now viable for the desktop. I have yet to see this pipe dream of larger desktop/laptop adoption come true - it's still primarily relegated to the back office and data center. I've been an avid Linux user and fan since 1993 with Yggdrasil Linux - use both it and Windows, but I'm not holding my breath about seeing it go mainstream.. Yeah it's behind Android, but it's really not the same thing.

You're right, I should have said desktop PCs. Chromebooks seem to be partly responsible for the overall increase, possibly driven by the Corona virus and a cheaper way of working from home.

Linux has been free since for ever and it only has a very small share of the market.
People like Windows and want a nice easy to install complete OS that supports everything out of the box.

In my view that was a silly move, as we all know there are costs in supporting it.

I find it interesting how throughout the history of Windows, they went back and forth between names and numbers for the versions. And furthermore, they sometimes used the year for the version. What a mess. Even more confusing when they skip things like Windows 9.

If you ask me, major upgrades should be "new" versions, while smaller things should just be extensions. And it should have all been numbered, with the minor ones starting at x.1 and going as high as necessary—so we would maybe see something like x.24. So like Windows Vista and 7 were the same thing, the latter just fixed a lot of things wrong with the former. So Windows Vista could be something like Windows 6—or, if you prefer, 6.0–with Windows 7 being something like Windows 6.1.

From what little I've heard, the new version will be free for Win10 users. I suspect it's going to be essentially an patch/upgrade version with some UI changes and rebranded to get rid of the "10", much as Apple did going from OSX to MacOS.

As for Linux, it's fine for those who enjoy tinkering and being different, but it's not going to replace Windows desktops anytime soon. Even ignoring the trillion dollar Windows PC gaming market, MS Office is so ubiquitous that it's difficult to do anything significant without it.

Windows 10's updates are like what Apple did for the MacOS for ages, upgrade it every so often. I think the last time Apple charged for an upgrade was like $5 for an update disc many moons ago. And probably was to cover the cost of the disc.

When "10" was thought of, no one probably thought Appelz would do OS 11.

Yes, but there are new features in it, so that's why it's known as "11." I don't foresee Microsoft adopting their old "numbered" methodology, we saw that with the release of Xbox One S/Xbox One X > Xbox Series S/Xbox Series X. They've changed their naming conventions.

This leak was intentionally done to collect information from everyone as both bug fixing, and general consumer feedback.

For example their new "WinGet" tech was released, but with problems...



THIS will undoubtedly be inside W11. Its only a matter of collecting information, and feedback.

Microsoft announced an "event" for June 24th at 11am (not a typical time for them) weeks ago. Speculation was immediately that it was Windows 11 and everything has borne that out, including Linus Tech Tips installing a build.

Doesn't look like much new in this new version.
I read "new apps in the app store" and my heart raced dreaming they would add new Windows Phone apps......
I just hate having the best phone in the world (Lumia 950) and not having updated apps for it - I also hate that MS ended support for the phone 1 month after I bought it. New version of windows (my phone runs WIN10) and they probably won't support the phone with the new version either. Bummer.
