Best place to sell a forum in 2020?

Hi,

Times change and I'm struggling to work out a decent place to sell a long-established UK sports forum. I've checked some of the 'famous' marketplaces but there doesn't seem to be much there in terms of comparable sites. Are there still forum networks that acquire sites? I've been out of the loop a long time!

PS. Is there an area on here too? Seems a sensible place, but I can only see Classifieds which seems to be licenses and domains, not established sites.

Hi TLChris - yes that's what confused me really - is no-one selling them these days? Are the networks (if they still exist) snapping them up or what's going on? I kind of assumed I'd find other forum owners in a similar position, but the market is very quiet. In terms of where you list them on TAZ, is that just in the classifieds area? Not sure if you're happy to suggest any non TAZ places? It seems to be hard to find quality places vs quantity!

There not many places that allow selling websites, mostly because of how to proceed.

They still are trying at least.
My guess is a lot of the forums on sale are failing to some extent and have difficulty justifying their asking price, especially as ad revenue has not only not remained stable but collapsed in the last few years across the board (google, amazon affiliation, affiliate optimizers like viglinks...) and is expected to decrease further, so the traditional valuations are even harder to justify.

Additionally, the very concept of a 'community' has changed. Leadership figures successful on social media, youtube or twitch have no difficulty retaining a following they can easily monetize and manage through platforms, without incurring any of the pains of self-hosting a forum for members to chat with each others. Why suffer for a 100 bucks a month when you could be making a lot more promoting snake oil on instagram ?
These ecosystems also have highly active support groups discretely propping their members' up (sharing promo deals, negotiating good deals with direct advertisers on behalf of members, boosting each others' follow/view counts like forums' concept of post exchanges and banner trading and more - so many offers keep coming a normal influencer rejects most).

To answer the original inquire, the best option to sell a forum is likely to directly contact the owner of a forum network (a handful hang here) and see if theyre interested in you transfering control of your community to them at a mutually agreeable price.

Sometimes it’s less about activity and time to move on. Communities can do fine without some feedback and guidance for a lil while, but to grow it needs structure and guidance.

Digital Point's marketplace is more active than TAZ's. I sold a vBulletin license there once, it was fast. Now for a site, I can't tell, but it's worth a try.

It's been a long time since I've checked in there. Last time I did, it was like all I was seeing was things that probably didn't sell on Flippa.

Depends if the site is making any money to start with, if they have a desire to keep pushing the site etc. Sometimes, it's best to take some money off the table, and sell. Just happens that way.

If the forum is successful, then people will notice and the offers will come in. If it needs to be advertised, then the aforementioned websites including TAZ are avenues to try. Another method could be to talk to your competitors and let them know that you are accepting offers.

You can also potentially list on your forum provider's website (if they offer a space).
