I usually choose my usernames based on music, movies, TV shows, or books that are fresh on my mind. So I must've chosen this username based on either the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still or the band Klaatu (I'm a fan of both.)

Way back in the day - pre internet - there was AOL...

AOL had chat rooms. One of the common questions was "where are you from" - and the other was "What is your real Name" --

I'm from Chicago. My name is Joey.

Hence - JoeyChgo - It cut 2 common questions out and made things faster.

When I first joined the Internet my ISP asked me for a 'user name' I had no idea what that was but after an explanation I suggested 'zappa' which of course was taken so I added 'DPJ' which means nothing to anyone but me

I came up with this name for the Game Shark forums in the early 2000s. It worked fairly well at the time. To separate another world from this username, I totally stole "The Ignorant Masses" from the ultimate move in the game Chaos Legion when that came out. Years later, that lead to my more modern username of "Gene Timothy Cromwell", a combination of GC and TIM.
