Okay, I'll be the guy that makes the obvious remarks.

• Why can't she buy her own car?
• Given the global warming crisis, wouldn't an environmentally friendly electric/hybrid be a better choice? Or at least something more economical like a Fiat 500.

I can't speak for other states, but I know most of the power companies including municipal ones burn natural gas to spin up their turbines or whatever it is they use to generate electricity. This is a Lexis 2IS. That engine can easily complete 400-500K miles with general maintenance. I'd be surprised if a modern Fiat can get to 100K and past it without major repairs. I live on the west coast in a state focused on being eco friendly. Unless the energy is 100% renewable, you're doing very little.

I do my fair share of being eco-friendly, but my next car is going to have a twin turbo V8 4 liter engine. A Prius doesn't interest me in the slightest. And having toyed with Model Ss, they're simply not what I want apart from their shoddy fabrication and quality control.

fixer Usually roll my eyes at your posts, but this is a quality car. Your new to you 2IS should have had its valves looked at by now. Should be able to put a few hundred thousand miles on that car before an engine rebuild if it comes to that. The 2IS, IMO, has better sound deadening and comfort than the 3IS, mainly due to huskier materials used in the floor and body panels and the lack of low profile tires. The 2IS is also a hundred pounds or so lighter than the 3IS.

It isn't ideal, I agree. However, there is still quite a difference between electric vehicles which rely on burning fossil fuel once to generate the electricity, and a V8 which burns highly volatile and toxic petrol that is made through an even more polluting refining process.

BTW, congrats on being environmentally conscious. I'm no tree-hugger, but I also try to reduce my environmental footprint as best I can. Cars, and transport in general, is still a huge area that needs serious investment and improvement.

And you could be right. That Lexus engine might last a few hundred thousand Km. However, based on the Lexus owners I know, the rest of the car is unlikely to make it a quarter of that distance.

Companies used to criticize that and then they realized Toyota was smart to do that. Which is why VAG cars share engines, including their higher end brands, along with general parts, platforms, chassis. Though these days, the more modern Lexi don't share much like they used to. Which also drives up repair costs. Ford, GM, Fiat Chrysler, Tata, et al. all share parts and engines. You'd be surprised how many cars use engines from other car companies. The car landscape isn't what you or I grew up with or knew up until the last 10 years. It's the wild wild west.

2IS is generally a better ride comfort wise than the 3IS, while the 3IS is sportier and has better handling, at the cost of comfort. You'll fall asleep driving the 2IS, the 3IS, not so much. The 3IS is more like the 1IS, except not as stiff. A mint 1IS will set you back anywhere from $20-30K, especially if it's mint condition and low mileage. Tack on another $3-8K if it's the wagon version. I bought a 2IS on a whim new. You could probably find one for under $12K provided it's crossed 200K miles. Barely driven. Used on one weekend a month if I remember we have it. Dealer offered me around $27K for it last year. Turned it down. It's a comfortable cruiser. A Japanese Cadillac, if you will.

My biggest regrets were not buying the original LS or the 430 that came out in the late 1990s.

I work in the industry, my wife picked the color. I do the rest. I frequent automobile manufacturing facility's. Toyota is king no one is close. i wish everyone knew their business philosophy if so no one would ever buy anything different. they top every single reliability chart, treat their employees like gold, and stand behind everything they make.

I would proudly fly the Toyota badge on the grill of this car.... but they do not make an awd sedan under the name toyota

Yes, they do. The Prius 4 door comes in AWD flavor. It'd make more sense to offer the Avalon with AWD. Though I'm not too fond of Toyota's AWD system, or their lack of wanting to offer up Android Auto and or Car Play until people became angry with them.

I think what you meant to say is that you would never ever buy a Prius.

I can't dispute that. My wife still drives and loves her 1989 Tercel. The odometer has been around a few times and the only signs of wear are in the upholstery.

Around here, anyway, the Lexus doesn't seem to fair as well. Maybe it's the weather (Up to +40C in the summer and down to -40C in the winter.) or the bone-jarring potholes that result from it, but most of the Lexus owners I've known have had a variety of issues, though not with the engine.

Or... and I'm just throwing it out there - she doesn't have any interest in picking it out or he knows more about cars? I know if my other half offered to buy me a car (he won't because I can't drive and have no interest in learning) I'd respond with "you do it, I don't care so long as it goes from A to B and isn't pink or a hairdresser's car."

I accept that. I have great respect for women who choose to be full time mothers and partners (household management technician?), and I'm sure Mrs. Fixer is an intelligent, capable woman. I was really just having a go at Fixer's choice of language. "Bought my wife a new car" sounds a bit patriarchal these days.
