How did it come about that you went from being a third party developer to a full fledge XF developer?
I'm not sure I know what free time is, anymore. But I suppose I'll ask what do you like doing in your free time
Honestly, there isn't anything I can pinpoint. Customers are very patient with us and anything that we don't want to implement we will usually mark it as "Not planned" straight away or some suggestions just receive little interest so it becomes a non-issue.What feature request do you get begged to implement the most that you absolutely hate and want no part of?
I woke up one morning to find a PM from Ashley in my inbox. How did it come about that you went from being a third party developer to a full fledge XF developer?
It came out of the blue and I never imagined it would essentially be a job offer. I gave it some thought (for about 20 seconds) and the rest is historyI wanted to have a quick voice chat with you if you have a few minutes. It's just an idea that we want to ask you about.
They wanted a third developer and I guess they thought I was the best person for the job.Did the XF team indicate why they decided to offer you the job?
I like Mike the best now.I pretty much do all of my development on a MacBook Pro, though often that's docked up to a decent screen and proper keyboard and mouse. I do have a Windows PC as well, though that's rarely used for work now. Will occasionally be used for games.
Kier uses a 27" iMac and Mike uses a Windows machine.
... and if I have time: playing games.
Obviously I can't go into detail but as far as I understand, the business is doing well and fairly consistent. Is XenForo as a business doing better than around 1.0 and 1.2 releases, or has it slowed?
Nothing is really ignored. We do what we can.It seems like no effort is made to get nulled versions on xf removed from the internet , the same downloads that are very easy to find just seem to go ignored. Is it because there is nothing you can do about it?
Sure. Steam ID is chris_d IIRC.Can we be friends on Steam?
Honestly, I'm not sure. Certainly time won't always be an issue so nothing is beyond the realms of possibility for the future. If money and time was not an issue what sort of official add-on would you make for Xenforo.
...
On a personal note, I've always thought it might be interesting to see if XF could be turned into a general PHP framework along the lines of Symfony and Laravel. I'm not saying that we'd ever do that, or there's a desire to do that, but it could be interesting.
Pretty much hate threaded discussions with a passion. Then again, I've never been a fan of Reddit and sites like 4chan either. Maybe if I used them more, I'd become to warm to the idea. What is your opinion of threaded style discussions (reddit, hacker news) and imageboard ones (4chan)?
Most recently, C++ as I wanted to learn a bit about game development via Unreal Engine. I have never found a programming language that has drawn me in as much as PHP, sadly. I fairly often purchase courses on Udemy with a view to learning some new programming skills in my spare time but with spare time being limited, I rarely get very far. Some other Udemy courses I have purchased have been focused on iOS development (Swift) and React.Which are the programming languages you fiddled with most recently, if any, beside PHP or JavaScript (if you used js in a Node.js context, I'd)?
I don't actually feel like websockets is the answer for push notifications. It feels more useful for things like real-time chat applications. The thing that frustrates me the most is the lack of native push notification support in Safari and iOS. By which, I mean, they haven't yet implemented service workers and push/notification APIs in the Apple products. There is a proprietary method of doing push notifications in Safari on macOS but I'll never entertain the idea - Apple should be using the same specs and standards as everyone else otherwise they run the risk of becoming this generation's Microsoft Internet Explorer. You developed a XF1 push notifications add-on, which used an external service/API if I'm not mistaken.
What are your thoughts on the lack of native support for websockets in PHP, would you consider using a library such as Ratchet if you were to re-create that add-on today?
