We have 512k ram. I'm thinking we should quadruple this to 2024k to alleviate this. What do you all think?

Lol, the Macintosh 512K had 512k RAM back in 1984; you mean MB?

You could get your RAM increased and then run something like MySQL Tuner.

You often get the gone away error when the connection has timed out.

Hello,

I'm thinking of starting one more forum. I could host it on my existing VPS but don't want to because I'm not sure for how long I will continue this new forum. So thinking of getting a new cheap shared hosting temporarily.

What do you think? Is Godaddy able to handle Xenforo? Or do I need a better host?

Kindly help me this.

Regards

If you already have a vps, surely that means you're not paying extra to host one more site, right?

Personally I'd never trust GoDaddy for hosting as far as I could throw it, mostly because I've seen too many times where strange things have happened that mysteriously break things.

My goal is to have a temporary host for as less price as possible. I don't want to use my VPS because it's already on its limits. I'll have to upgrade it anyway to host another forum. So it's better to get a new host as long as I can't ensure the longevity of my new forum.

Try 1and1 - they offer a starter package for next to nothing. Depending on which country you're registering from, use your local or nearest 1and1 site. This is the cost in GBP and USD:

1and1.co.uk or 1and1.com

Godaddy is moving their infrastructure to Amazon's virtual cloud, so I presume past performance benchmarks for shared hosting will no longer apply and need reevaluation.

As suggested above, you might find picking a different webhost a more cost-effective proposal, preferably one small enough to offer personalized assistance with issues, as dealing with behemoths the size of Godaddy can be frustrating.

I've used it for 13 years now hosting multiple forums and sites, and never had even one teeny tiny little problem or issue. I must be the luckiest son of a gun on the web, either that or most of these GD doom and gloom stories are just that - stories.

To the OP, yes, a deluxe shared hosting plan from GD will handle a XF install, even if it gets to be a busy one. But if I had a VPN and it was unlimited on hosting of sites, I would use that rather than go to any added expense.

Lots of GD hate is out there. I have been a customer of GoDaddy for years (since approximately 2001). I also serve on their Customer Council.

I actually think it is better to go with a big established company than a small company that may or may not know what it truly takes to do the job. Yes as mentioned they are moving Amazon’s AWS infrastructure which should be a good thing.

As Anton Chigurh said, just a bunch doom and gloom stories that seem to get repeated. They seem to be the knee jerk reation when someone mentions GD.

I will say that Pete has witnessed some GD support issues that I have seen him being involved in over on SImple Machines but in many cases people have caused their own issues.

The repeated deletion of SMF files for using "suspicious code" is still one of the ones that annoys me. Not to mention the bugs their implementation of mod_security caused, and we had to work around it by guesswork because they wouldn't help us as a vendor fix the issue their environment caused.

I recall those reports of SMF files being deleted. I never have had that issue.

A long time back before I went to a VPS with them and I was on their shared hosting their mod_security presented an issue after they migrated me from one shared hosting server to another. Seems the settings were diffrent on the new server that they migrated me onto and a quick call about my Not Acceptable 406 Error was quickly resolved with them making some rule tweaks on the new server.

I'd note we did track it down in the end but only mostly by luck.

Godaddy's had a BIG crash, 1000s of sites affected including ALL of mine.

First trouble I've ever had with them in 15 years of hosting with them.

Sites cannot connect with the server, producing db errors or or other error pages. It appears to be global and really huge.

Map and comments here:

EDIT TO ADD: This includes their email servers as well.

From GoDaddy Support: We're currently having an issue with our internal tools. We're not
able to pullup accounts and check products/services. There are reported
issues with hosting platforms as well affecting site accessibility.

All of my sites are registered with GoDaddy but not hosted there. They are all loading fine.
