Any tips on how to improve your website's SEO ranking?

The answer is complicated -- There are many things. Fresh content that other people want to link to is a good start, but there is a lot more. I would suggest you do some research, there is a lot on the net about this.

The most important thing is having valuable, well-written content. If you're using any decently popular software, it will likely already be fine in terms of its optimization. I mention popular simply because there may be some obscure, poorly coded ones that won't help your cause — but I honestly doubt there are many out there where the software itself will hold your site back.

Google loves authoritative articles; if you're writing about a particular topic, go in depth and really delve into that topic. But don't be redundant to where you're giving visitors information that doesn't matter or write in circles. 2,000-5,000 word articles will hit the front page of Google my from experience. Less words can as well, depending on how many articles on other sites are in direct competition for those keywords.

I think "SEO" is something 90% of people don't need to worry about. Don't worry about having the perfect article title, don't worry about meta keywords (which are essentially useless to SEO), don't worry about anything other than writing content for your site. There are really no tricks to getting ranked other than writing superb content that people are willing to share across social media.

If you can't write a better article than your competitor, you're not going to rank higher than them by utilizing "SEO tactics."

SEO is invented by criminals to fool naive people ('freshers in business').......
What I do, and will continue till all criminals (in the webmastrers world) are penalized heavily, is not only to report them wherever I can (tax office, C&P units and so on), but also to describe their shady activity online giving full details (including personal data).

So, if I spend a bit of time making my site slightly better at making content available for search engines and a useful preview when linked in Facebook, according to you I'm now a criminal and need to be reported.

Uh... no.

'Search engine optimization' is pretty much only adressing weaknesses in defining your content in a stable structure.

'Rankings' on any search engine cannot be guaranteed, since each has their own criterias to sort results.
On google, freshness of content, loading speed in general, then the absence of deranking factors (like no https, interstitial/fullscreen ads, no mobile-optimized version when browsed from mobiles).

Well, you could make your members pass a test on keyword stuffing. (kidding)

But seriously, what LeadCrow said, but otherwise good luck on a public forum. There are enough examples of bad SEO on this board and we're all supposed to know better. This post is "bad" SEO if you get down to it, but that's the nature of the format.
