Someone belittled it asking if I was working with the OP and if not, like I shouldn't have responded.
Belittled? I don't think so. They asked whether you were working with the op and opined that if not, you didn't know what they were thinking. I don't really see the point there - clearly you weren't trying to guess what anyone was thinking but rather listing features in response to general criticisms of vB5 by people other than the op.

Dammit.
While I was making my OP in this thread I knew this thread was a "Post Once, GTFO" thread.
And I was right.

2) It's the world's leading community software

But...

Is it "A compelling community experience"?
Does it "Build Awesome Communities"?
Has it been "Leading communities to success since 2001"?
Is it "Made in Germany"?
Is it "THE #1 FREE, OPEN SOURCE BULLETIN BOARD SOFTWARE"?
Is it "Forum software everyone can love"?
Is it "Elegant, Effective, Powerful, Free"?
Is it "A civilized discussion platform for your community"?
Is it "Forums made simple"?
Is it "The Ultimate Bulletin Board since 1997"?

Hate to break it to you, but you all have your taglines. :p

I would imagine our customer database says different.
You can probably find it online.

I IMAGINE if vB was still the leader, they would be selling tons of licenses and hiring staff like crazy. The only vB news, has been them letting staff/devs go...

I may be super paranoid (apparently), but I am pretty sure I never "belittled" vB5.

I wanted to know from the OP who was considering moving from XF to vB5, their main reasons for doing so. Now if they come back and say 'well it has blogs, articles, groups, calendar/events, and a site wide CMS system', I will bow to your superior knowledge in knowing what people want from their software, that their current does not.

I see it didnt take long for the usual suspects to turn this into another bashing thread.

The question was is it viable - the answer is yes.
Personal hate for IB/VB isnt a factor in viability (just like my dislike for it isnt).

JFYI, there are quite a few hundred sites in the vB5 cloud system, some of them quite large.
For the last two years they have also run a (the ?) US Big Brother forum site (on cloud) - which gets quite busy when its on air.

Should the question not be awnsered differenty Paul M

The question "is it viable" should it not be "depends on the website and the owner" what works for person A doesn't have to work for B.

You say there hundred sites in the vB5 cloud that are large. But the cloud has some drawbacks like not realy able to select a theme only do manual adjustments. No running add-ons. So for those sites its not a problem but a large site that is depended if addons and run anyother forum software that wants vB can have issues with it. So it all comes down it all depends.

There's two different questions that are typically asked.

1. Is it a viable option? As in does it function at a basic level.
2. Is it the correct option? As in does it function to my needs specifically.

Your answer would be more likely the answer to the latter, rather than the former.

Yes XF is a viable option because it has email notification e.g last week's most popular topics and is what got me to reply to this thread. VB does not have it.

If there was a migration tool for VB to XF I would do without the useful CMS that VB has and switch to XF right away.

HostXNow so you are on vB5 now and want to go to XF whereas OP is considering jumping from XF to vB5. Different strokes indeed!

To be fair, we're using an add-on for that - it's not built into XF. I believe vB does have one or more add-on options for a newsletter as well. It's an effective tool!

There are just a few issues
  • No php hooks which we would like so developer can create module which would allow us to limit certain usergroup to only post 'x' number of threads per week
  • The editor is a bit laggy sometimes
  • Missing the most popular topics from the previous week. This is very important because with all apps etc nowadays many are overwhelmed with which sites to use. Many forget a lot of the sites they use because of this. Sending a weekly email of the most popular topics will likely have them interested in something and take part in the forum again, Especially true for new signups.
Other than those I am happy with vBulletin 5. It supports PHP 7 and loads very fast on LiteSpeed which supports HTTP2 etc (link to the forum in signature).

If there is one I do not know about it? Some developer to suggest making use of RSS Feed but I can't be messing about with that, I'd rather leave that to those who do coding.

Another popular forum using vBulletin 5 is https://vbmods.rocks
