I'd like to hear more from WoltLab users as well. Seems there are a great many XF and vB users here at TAZ, but not much is said by those using WoltLab Suite. I am still undecided about my pending conversion from vB 3.8 to another product. I am leaning toward either WoltLab or IPS because they have more complete packages. I hate relying on 3rd party apps when it comes to major components, like a fully integrated CMS. If XF had that option, it would be an easier answer.

I think thats because woltlab is an German product, its great, but i also think it scares off allot of people.. And then you also have those and are using Xen/IPB for years and don't know any products because they don't need them.

Also the bigger addons on woltlab are cheaper then those on Xen or IPB as is the main license cost.

You only pay $45 ~ / 2 years(after the inital license) for getting a new major version + 2 years of updates :)

I was hoping to get feedback from those using the latest version of WoltLab Suite. I'm not interested in add-ons or plugins to fulfill my CMS needs. I have been dealing with that for over 10 years using vBulletin (I've got no interest at all in versions greater than 3.8.x). Most recently, I've been using WordPress for one of my sites. It's a great CMS, maybe one of the best, but it's not fully integrated with any quality forum software without 3rd party support. I don't want that. That's why I have narrowed my choices to WoltLab and IPS suites - their latest versions only (no interest at all in prior versions of those products).

Sorry for any confusion.

The biggest issue with it is that it's still a German centric support site and you can get some assistance when needed, but it's harder to come by than with either IPS or XenForo.

Thats one of the negative points, the other one is that the addon eco system is a bit more decentral, there is a a plugin store, but not all the addons can be found there, some addon creators only sell addons via theire own shop...

Jim, I've been nothing but pleased with Burning Board. I've been running it since June of last year when I moved from vB 4.1.2. Rock solid and loads very quick, after moving from vB I noticed just how much faster pages load with Burning Board over vB.

4.1.2 which was and is the crappiest version of vB known to man. ;-) I couldn't move back to vB 3.8 after words and was stuck.

Thanks. Can you share a link to your site (privately, if you don't want to make it public)? What plugins are you using?

What I found ubnormal is that first I need to pay to upgrade to 4.1 and then from 4.1 to 5.0.
Actually, no.

There is no direct upgrade path from 4.0 to 5.0, instead you'll need to upgrade from 4.0 -> 4.1 and then 4.1 -> 5.0. Both processes run straight from the ACP though, so it is quite easy but adds a bit more burden as if you would upgrade 4.0 -> 5.0 in one step.

The upgrade cost however is based entirely on which version your license had access to last. The biggest saving comes with licenses that already have access to 4.1, whereas you would pay a bit more if you only have access to 4.0. So if you're upgrading your license from 4.0 today, you would pay less than a new license *and* less than 4.0 -> 4.1 + 4.1 -> 5.0.

Jim McClain The Core itself is free and ships with the entire CMS, which is designed to be used by anybody, regardless of their technical background. You've mentioned WordPress which was somewhat our goal in terms of simplicity in usage, so you should be able to quickly set up pages. In case you want to dive deeper, you can still opt-in to create pages using raw HTML.

Someone of you or the anonymous (really why anonymous?) replier
Both replies have the proper signature appened to the message, may I assume that you are referring to a different ticket id?

So where is the option to upgrade to 4.1 as you wrote before?
Licenses can only be updated to the latest version at that time, but we do grant a discount for licenses that have access to more recent versions. The more recent the version, the higher is the discount.

Can you give me a logic explanation on this?
As you are trying to compare two different renewal-payment-systems, you can't get an explanation for one system, using the logic of the other system. You have to calculate yourself if on the long run, the one or the other renewal-system seems fair and good to you. Both have their pros and contras. Only you can decide if one or both are good for you.

You don't like one, then let it go. Your thoughts on how logic the one or the othe is, won't change either the one or the other company in their renewal-payment-system. So... take it or not, you can't change it ;)

The comparison is a bit off, considering that owners of a license for Burning Board 4.0 (released in Dec 2013) are receiving full update and support coverage without any extra costs. The last update to the WCF 2.0 series (Burning Board 4.0 falls into this category) was on Feb 28, which was less than a month ago, free of charge.

This doesn't necessarily justify any price differences you might experience when purchasing an update, but this is certainly something you should add to your calculations when comparing with competitors. I guess you can sum it up as a simple upfront cost with no on-going expenses?
