It's the most modern WBB skin I've found so far and it's dirt cheap compared to XF skins.

Wow, that is ugly. Nothing in comparison to several XF skins from PixelExit or Audentio. Rather a reason not to buy WBB, if this is the "most modern" skin.

Ich verstehe nicht, Deutsch, übersetzen Sie bitte.

Not important marketing speech at their site. See the full "beauty" of this skin here in their demo ("Produktvorschau", they could have named the link "Demo" but seem to not want to make it too easy for potential english customers):

There way better then the one that got linked.

As for the topic starter, give Wolt Lab a chance, there pretty good and the support is also very good :)

Kittblog are pretty good, and I agree that their support is great. I still have a licence for one of their themes, even though I no longer have a WBB licence.

That skin/theme is dire, it's really bad.
If that were the default skin on the official WBB forums, it would never get a sale, lol
What's dire about it?
Mind being specific?

I've been researching forum software for weeks, and after finally settling on VBulletin 5 after seeing a layout I really liked on a Honda Acccord forum, access to the site today was crashed by a hacker...

A few questions:

Is the software vulnerable because of its popularity?

Is there a comparable software that's just as reliable and user-friendly? (I guess reliable is subjective at this point)

Is most forum software "you get what you pay for?"

My web experience deals mostly with Wordpress, so I was hoping the dashboard functionality of whatever I go with would be just as easy to use. I also found VBulletin pricing to be reasonable.

I'm really glad I found this forum as questions in my Wordpress days were answered by pouring over hundreds of webpages. I hope to be able to reciprocate in the future when I earn my cap and gown!

Tommy

1- No forum software is vulnerable because of their Popularity, they are vulnerable because of the lack of development or knowledge behind Security.
2- The last version of IP.Board comes with a very handy system called Visual Skin Editor (Live editing blocks for those who aren't very Forum Savvy) and the interface works great for me. If you want something a bit more cheap but still with good quality, you can try http://xenForo.com (I used it and im in love with it despite of my preference for IPB)
3- Both of the Softwares i listed are quite good, you pay for what you get (For me it has been completly good so far, so i can't say much on it)

So, what should i get?: I would say xenForo for a matter of prices and quality (IP.Board is good but the price is a bit expensive)

Geez...both companies are friggen sentive.

Response to a post I made on VB:

  • I know this topic has been touched on, but the info is years old. From what I can gather people are leaving VBulletin 5 in droves, so that leaves me with earlier versions or Xenforo.

Will VBulletin scrap 5 and go back to the drawing board? I have no experience with it, and what turned me onto VBulletin were driveaccord.net, powerboatnation.com, and f150forum. Almost everyone has told me to switch to Xenforo, but I'm also told the dashboard is confusing and prone to Spam. Also, why was this page shut down all day?

What are everyone's thoughts? I will say I see Xenforo's and IPB's employees engaging their forums and answering potential customer's questions. I don't see anyone from VBulletin offering any insight as to whether they will fix VBulletin 5

  • From Mark B of VBulletin:

This isn't really an appropriate topic for these forums. Discussion of other forum software is best handled on that company's forums where they have professional staff experienced and trained in their product who are able to provide accurate information in response to questions about that product. We can only do that for our own product, obviously.

In terms of vBulletin 5, development continues and new versions will continue to be released that fix issues, add improvements and add new features, as appropriate.

In the meantime, if you have any questions that are specific to vBulletin, please feel free to start a thread/threads with the details, and we'll provide clear, straightforward answers for you.
To be fair, I shouldn't have mentioned Xenforo problems. I feel like I did express my concerns with 5 clearly, and all I was looking for was why I should go with VB instead. Guys on any of these boards need a course in communication.

I read a post about Google ranking VBulletin higher, with proof to support it, so I wanted to do more research. I guess it's a tossup now. More and more I'm wishing forum software was an open source platform like Wordpress where everyone was coming together to offer a wonderful product.

In the end I'm going with Xenforo. It's just hard to move away from the sites that originally turned me onto forums that are running VBulletin :(

Thanks for letting me vent!!

I'm no stylist, so probably can't explain what's wrong with it properly, but it's like someone has splashed two pots of different hued paint on the forum and called it a style.
Words that sprung to mind when I saw it, muddy, boring, depressing, confusing.

Oh, OK.
I thought there's something wrong with the coding.
But it seems just a matter of personal taste.

I'm not a practitioner of Xenforo religion, so I have no bias to defend. I have some reservations about the skin (unrelated to coloring which can easily changed) like the lack of top-bottom button, no search option on the floating bar etc. Understandably inferior to Xenforo premium skins but not something that can't be revamped. I don't know about kittblog but I've checked cls-design yet was not satisfied with their old style. I much prefer flat theme but that's again just my personal taste.

I don't want to knock anybody's platform, but I have grown pretty fond of Xenforo, and not from just the expert advice I've received here. I'm starting to see more and more sites that have that crisp, clean look, and the functionality seems to be very user-friendly.

I did find this information interesting, however:

https://xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-google-results-fall-behind-vbulletin.106046/

hogwash... Google does not favor one software over another.

The thread you've linked is actually a good example of why XenForo is head and shoulders above most of the competition. Two staff members including a developer have taken the OPs concerns seriously and there's a proper dialogue occurring between the company and the customer.

Had the same post been made in vBulletin's forum at best the OP would have been told to enter it into their tracker where you can be 99.99% sure it would have sunk without trace.

I have had a lot of experience with both vBulletin (3&4) and XenForo and I'd say there's very little to choose between them as far as Google search listings are concerned.

Even if it had the most number of votes, too. ;)
