Never used it, never heard of it.

Just taken a look - won't be using it. Based on SMF. No thanks.

Ok, thanks.
It's been out there for a few months now but it doesn't seem to have attracted all that many users yet, could be because it's still beta though.

Not agree with you, just because is based on smf that doesn't mean it's not a good software. Before giving an opinion you should at least install and try it, or do you give your opinions based on default theme? Just for your general knowledge was written by the author of aeva gallery, one of the most downloaded mod for smf and for a period Arantor took part of the project.

For me it's a nice software, it has some nice features in the core like gallery integrated, responsive design , infinite scrolling, likes, mentions, notifications, double post merge, drafts, etc... And it's free

I was planning to switch two smf forums, but in the end I choosed elkarte because I found it more supported by the developers.

Some of us just don't like the general feel of SMF. I know I've never really been a fan, and I know Lisa isn't a fan either. Doesn't mean it's bad software.

I agreed with Morganna's post because it's based on another software. I like the idea, but I wouldn't want to run a production site that's based on another framework. Why wouldn't I just use the framework it's based on? What happens when SMF updates their core, will widget then update it's framework as well?

It was all rewrited, the development of this forum software took some years (4 or 5), you will receive the updates from wedge not from smf.

I don't see nothing wrong in using a fork, especially when the development of the original project is very slow and the new fork is getting better than the original. Smf is also a fork of yabb forum if that's so significant

I don't have problems running a fork (second link in my signature), in fact I am using elkarte and for me and for my users is much better than smf.

P. S. Maybe the author of wedge Nao could give you more information

And this :)

Not agree with you,
As is your right. You don't have to agree with me, you just have to accept that I don't want to use it :D

TBH nobody asked that :p
Beg to differ:-

Just checking how many (more) Wedge users there are out there,
He asked how many other users were out there, I stated I didn't use it and that I wouldn't.

It's completely irrelevant, mind you, and a pointless argument you're trying to have. I don't use it, not planning on using it, not interested in using it. Reasons have been given. So far, I've yet to see anyone actually say they are using it or trying it, just try to argue with people who have said they're not. :p

Yeah, same here, I'm absolutely no fan of infinite scrolling, but in *some* situations it can be very helpful, it's just that I never liked that some websites were so adamant in adding infinite scrolling to every page 'because it's easier to use'. No-- if you do a lot of back'n'forth between pages, infinite scrolling is a pain because your contents tends to go away and you have to scroll again.

The Wedge version is properly implemented. It only shows up on topic pages, where usually you don't do a lot of page jumping (links open in a new tab so they don't disrupt that flow), and even then, it's only triggered if you go below the end of the page and you try to go even further below. It loads the next page in the background, then it reacts on page loading intent, rather than trying to be 'helpful' and showing it immediately.
I could have done it a bit differently and simply shown the new page immediately when clicking the 'Next' link. It didn't work as well as I thought, so... I went for infinite. Which there are ways to disable, BTW.

-----------------------------------------------------

I'll answer other questions and respond to criticism. Sorry for the long post -- and it might sound like I'm bragging, but I'm really not: I have nothing to sell, I'm just trying to share my points of view.

- Yes, ElkArte is definitely more active than Wedge, or at least after Pete left the project, but there are reasons for that.
(1) New dad since last year, so my productivity went down understandly.
(2) Wedge is free, and I made zero money out of it. No recognition either. No requests from third parties to work for them. I eventually had to find a job that actually brings money in. Someone just get a Patreon started for me, and I'll work on Wedge permanently, just like I did for 5 years!
(3) I don't want to say, but some of the competition (not particularly Elk) is mostly unemployed students trying to prove their worth. Usually you have more time and energy in that situation than when you're a 40yo dad. They'll soon be in my place )
(4) Last time I checked out their code (it was a long time ago though), it still had many features missing that were in Wedge, and they kept rewriting their new features because, well, team work can be a bitch...?
- More active doesn't always mean 'better'... When a product is perfect, you don't need to update it. :p The time around which I stopped working on Wedge roughly matches the period when I was happiest with it. I guess I didn't call it 'Gold' because I was unsure whether I could handle the arrival of many new users while being busy on other projects, so I did nothing that could draw attention on the project and its completion.
- Also, it's not abandoned. It just doesn't need any bug fixing for now, and I'm simply not adding new features because the current features work just fine. Whenever a bug is submitted to me (on github, as I don't go to wedge.org a lot), I'm on it.
- Arantor worked on Wedge for about 3 years. He did a lot of good to the codebase, even though he was a bit too extreme. I admired his ambition, and I miss talking with him, but in the end I still had to finish his work by myself. Added an extra year to my schedule. :-/
- Wedge has *nothing* to do with SMF these days (we haven't drawn from their codebase since 2011 or so), most of its weaknesses were savagely removed years ago, and replaced with better code. Also, mods are partly compatible (thanks to a feature I added in the last months of development), but themes aren't at all. Themes in Wedge are much more powerful, and better implemented. Not that it matters if no one is making any, right..?

-----------------------------------------------------

Wedge is my favorite project of everything I ever worked on. And I made a multi-award-winning indie game before it, so that's saying something. Seriously, a Patreon would be ideal for me but it's not the kind of thing I'm going to overtly ask of anyone. So for now, I'm stuck with spending most of my time working on making games.

Whether you use Wedge or not is your decision. If you use it, you might be waiting a long time for new themes or mods to be created by the community. (Bug fixes are dealt by myself ASAP when submitted through github.) If you don't use it, you miss out on a lot of excellent features that would make your forum stand out. Also, you're contributing to the lack of users that make it harder to get new users. See what I mean? ;)

PS: again, I haven't evaluated ElkArte or XF or anything for at least 2 years. Maybe they'll all caught up, I don't know, but my thoughts are based on what I felt when I was more 'active' in the scene.

From the website:

Flash is recommended for media embedding
(...) PHP 5.3 or higher

Seven months without a commit - I seriously wonder how long they'll keep it up.

I have found out that Wedge development is mostly channelled to lestrades today. At least it's not dead!

Wedge recently announced it was going actually-open source. Just putting that out there in case anyone wanted to know.

Have they finally given up trying to run the project themselves?

Considering that I quit in 2013 because I couldn't deal with the other person's attitude, I'd argue it's mostly been on some form of life support since then anyway... but yeah, Nao asked me if I was cool with making it MIT a few months back, I don't know if he's actively done it yet but I believe it was actually announced as going to be happening even if it hadn't happened *yet*.
