Anytime I hire a new mod, I announce it in our "Living Room" and post it on the Announcement Board. I put what board(s) they'll be moding as well. This way, members get a chance to welcome the mods.

I never promote people to staff, so when I do, it's a very big deal.

Normally, on a live board I announce new staff members along with all other changes that are remotely noticeable. By doing this, I can even keep guests upto date on the newest happenings. Hiring from the best member pool of the board is a great way to go, instead of hiring ffrom outside the forum because a majority of the registered users will have encountered the new staff's work before and had the monumentous chance to befriend them. Also, announcing staffing changes helps the general populous of the board to feel like they are being cared for and even considered when it comes to why the board is hiring someone.

We get too many new staff members too regularly to make an announcement each time really, although our members always create their own congratulations thread in the off topic section.

Usually, members notice rather rapidly, so there is no need for me to make an announcement. However, I like to announce the new staff members because then it known to members, if they don't visit daily or aren't extremely active.

I announce new staff so that the members know who they are just in case they need some answers to their questions via pm.

I have always been in the practice of announcing new staff members. I usually do a welcome post on the staff board and then an announcement in the public forums.

I think its a nice way to greet a new staffer and the members feel like they are informed. In the past I've seen that its an easy way to start drama or piss people off by not telling them what is going on.

I always announce new staff so that members aren't threaten by people whom they aren't aware of. A site where I didn't announce new staff I recieved a lot of people questioning if the site had been hacked by the user.

We always used to announce new staff. But we usually take on about 5 mods at a time, and bump people up to trial mod as we receive positive responses to our invites. The users have generally noticed the new trial mods and someone's made a thread about it themselves before all the responses are in, so I gave up announcing them.

I'd hold back and not move anyone up to staff rank before all the responses were back, but that's not at all fair to the ones who accept straight away, the last batch we took on, one guy was on holiday and took a week to read his PM. That would be a whole week's worth of learning lost for the others..

Also, I don't like giving users a legitimate reason to spam, which is all new staff threads tend to attract. posts split 50/50 between endless "Congrats!!" and comments like "wait, who's that? I've never heard of them" : /

I announce my staff members... I find it to be a fun thing to do for the forum, since the member that I made staff doesn't mind the attention and the other members like to send congrats to the member that just became staff on the forum...

I usually announce new staff in the Forum News section of the site. That way people know who is part of the team.

Public announcing, introducing person and functions, and thread left for people to post congratulations. This approach has only benefits IMO, it can be cold to not introduce transparently those who will have an impact on the direction of the ship. Promotions and stepdowns are events deserving of actual anouncements rather than being 'ninja-ed' :ninja:

Same here. I always announce a new staff member in my updates/feedback forum.

I don't make an official announcement. Since my forum is small, I don't often appoint a new staff member, and non-staff members find out quickly and easily enough anyway.

I usually announce beforehand that I'm looking for a moderator, but I don't give any details. That way when it happens, it's not a big shock. Of course, that means members will go around trying to behave themselves the best they can for a few days, but they have no idea what I'm looking for. That, and I usually have a member or two in mind before I announce.
