Instead of deleting them, turn off their ability to PM until they reach a certain # of posts. Liz

I emailed them and asked if there was anything of interest I could offer them. If I got no response, I limited the forums they could see. We chat about a lot of personal issues and my membership gets very 'up in arms' about lurkers.

Southernlady has the right idea and I see no reason to delete them either. Keeping an inactive account seems stupid but to guests its another member onto your user total.

I tend to look at their email address and their web site if they have one listed - if either of those look 'spammy' I remove them from their profile and disable their ability to post. If they don't have anything suspicious I just leave them. Often after a couple of weeks they start posting.

I have some members who joined and never ever posted anything, or spammed - I don't understand why people do that.

My forum is still very small (only 50 something members). I think once I get to well above 100 I might prune members with 0 posts, but I'd like to break the 100 barrier first

I'm going to prune mine (not without warning, of course, and not those who have logged in recently). Sure, it does make it look like you've got more members than you do, but it doesn't take long for people to figure out the gap between the total number of members and the number who are actually active. Mine has gotten to the point where I'm not comfortable with that distortion.

I believe that the majority of these members were spammers. I'd guess that about 90% of them fall into that category and the rest probably just forgot about us or whatever. They'll have a chance to re-activate their accounts before the prune.

we put inactive users ( read lurkers) into a specially made " Inactive User Group"

any user not showing activity within a specified time, like 60/90 days for example, is chucked in there.

they lose viewing privies until they actually post something.

after the set time....they are pruned.

we also have custom " special privelege" user groups that is set up the same way..if they dont log in or participate, they reclassified as regular members...

its funny, they all seem to show up 1-2 days before that cycle takes effect...lol

First...

Create a new user group..
call it " inactive-users" or something like that.
You can edit their forum permissions once you set it up, like no viewing of content or posting etc.( not really necessary because...well..they aint doing anything..lol)

select a parameter/ time frame for them like no activity after XX days.

then go to the "find users" section of the control panel and select those users and mass move them into that user group.

once that is done, you can send that user group e-mails stating that they will be removed from your board due to lack of activity.

it is possible that they either lost their login info, or just lost interest, so this could be a reminder to them.

if they dont " contact you" or post after a given time, just delete them based on what time frame you set up.

we use this primarily for totally inactive..ie. no activity/ login whatsoever because we encourage lurkers who at least "view/login" on our boards because they are ( maybe) clicking on links etc...

does this make sense?

We give them 7 days to post after signing up, and they have to post in the only thread they can see in that time, a hello thread, that other "validated" members can see and reply to, thus, you get them posting hello, as they can't read anythingelse, once they have done that, we add them to the validated members group, and if they still have a single post on their account a week later, we send them a PM, if they dont respond within another 7 days, bosh, there gone

We usually get intros out of our registrants... and if they never come back even to check their own intro, their user title remains One Post Wonder, auto set.

Nah I keep them because they will return anytime to my site and start posting so it's not really a good idea to delete members with 0 posts. Give them a chance.
