If that´s true, that´s pretty impressive.
Take Joel Comm for example.

I spent $200 for setup.

$30 for ASO
$160 vB owned
$10 for domain

Since then I have only spent $200 and that was for a custom skin. So far in ad revenue I have made like $10, but since I'm under 18 I can't join a decent paying network.

I spend (about) $10 a month on hosting. (With NetworkRedux.)
$4 for the domain name. I registered multiple domains .net, .org, .info, etc. etc. ($4 each)
I used to use phpBB. That's free.
I switched to myBB. That's free. (I'm debating on moving to vBulletin.)

I don't have an owned license because I wasn't sure if my site would even exist after a year. Fortunately for me, it has, and it has insanely exceeded my expectations. However, even if I do get an owned license, isn't there a renewal rate anyway? I remember seeing something about $30/year for something like access to the members' area. I could be 100% wrong, though.

mmmmm *thinks* I have three seperate sites running so.....

2 x $85 for two leased vb licences - will be upgrading these to owned very soon.
1 x $160(? can't remember the exact price) for one owned vb licence
3 x £60 for hosting
3 x £8 for domain name

That doesn't include the numerous skins bought for two of the sites, or the paid-for addons like gallery, rpg inferno, etc etc

1 vb owned licence (used to have 2 but sold one) $160

Webhosting $10 a month.

So quite cheap really and all the skins I have are free, I have paid for skins the past and will do so again in the future.

For my forum? None
I found a sponsor who payed the licenze and now the renewal for a banner ad (the only on the forum)

But my site itself costs money.
Around 70-80€/year domain costs (I hold 7 domains)
Webspace (25Gig space / Traffic around 100gig a month but can be more) around 15€
(webspace will get sponsored totaly in the future as well)

So for the site I run I think it is very hard to get it cheaper running then me

Just wondering, how many members has your boards?
$230 a month for hosting may seem like a "lot" for someone with no site or a small site but everything is relative. If you have 1000+ users visit a day, hosting costs are going to be a few hundred bucks but page views are going to be tens of thousands per day, so if you work at it right, you can make far more than your expenses.

At the same time, one server is nothing compared to some of the forums here. Take for example Nexopia which has an entire mini-cluster. I don't know what they pay for their setup but it isn't $230 and I doubt it's even as low as $2300. Ultimately every site is different and ever revenue stream is different. I can generate several times the revenue per pageview that another site can, yet I will never get the traffic levels seen by those same sites. Why? Because my industry is worth money but it's also small with less potential people to reach out to.

When you spend the first year isn't a lot... a few hundred on a license and hosting, and many hours of time. The question shouldn't be what are the costs, if $200-$300 is a lot for you to invest into a business (I'm assuming this is a business venture given your first post) then you don't have any place starting that business. This is especially true in competitive fields. Few forums have the luxury of having a desirable demographic and only a few competitors. This means that for a new site, you not only have to invest in the startup fees but in marketing. Things like link swapping, signatures, post exchanges and the like are fine and dandy but they will only take you so far. If you want to accelerate your growth you will invest in advertising and that is not a cheap venture (some do it with hundreds but the results are limited, most who get the results they want spend many thousands to do it, every month). All said you need to think of a commercial forum like any other business -- marketing is marketing, management is management and while you may be working on something that is "more fun", if profit is part of your goal, it takes a serious and professional approach to get there. The exception of course is non-commercial sites, in those cases your costs are less as you focus is different, covering costs then becomes the goal and making any profit is just a nice extra.

7.9 for a .com
4.8 for a hosting (i got my hosting business, so everything is in control)
ipb 1.3 - free

Will only upgrade it to a better board, better plan when it start to grow. Nowadays there are so many forums around, you might need to hit around first before jump in totally.

For one year of hosting and domain registration it came out to $58.50

I use SMF so i dont need to actually pay to license the forums itself.
