Default Swear words list
Okay some of us censor cuss words and some of us don't. But for those of us that do, what words to your censor?

Maybe we could compile some sort of list that new admins could use. Cause I don't know about you, but I'm not the most creative swearer.

My site owner is really strict on swear words, I'm happy to post a list here - is it against the ToS? LOL

Because my forum consists mostly of minors, I have a full word filter in effect. While there are over 100 words in the filter from my last check, most of them are not "bad" words. The few bad words are just the usual 4-letters and other possibly equally insulting words.

The bad words are filtered into humourous water gun related words. Typically it's something that will make them not want to post bad words again as well. For example, a few words are filtered to XPBackfire because the XPBackfire is notoriously a bad water gun (the name is quite accurate)!

The remaining filters are for spelling errors and other writing practices that I do not like. They filter out excess exclamation points and question marks, l33t stuff, AOLer talk, and change some words to more commonly known versions.

As you can imagine, I am strict on spelling and grammar at my forum. The standard is understandability only, and I provide everything to get this done (including a spell check).

Here's a few more unique things I filter out:

n.oob, n00b, noob = inexperienced user

A lot of kids come on to my forum and immediately assault the new guys. I do not like that and this filter actually stopped the assault.

!!, !!! = !
??, ??? = ?
!?, ?! = !

These cut out most excess exclamation points and question marks. I've found that some people feel the need to add twenty or more at the end some sentences.

thx, thanx = Thanks
ur = your
wud = would
youre = you're
dont = don't
ppl = people
cant = can't
plz = please
(and so on)

I try my best to cut the AOLer talk from my forum. I actually can barely read when someone posts like that because I never wrote like that myself. Even on IM programs I write out full sentences with proper punctuation and everything (and I still type faster than most everyone I talk to).

Many of my other filters are specifically related to water guns, so it wouldn't be best for myself to distribute the XML wordlist I have. You can handle each swearing situation individually and add the words over a period of time - it's what I did and I probably have one of the largest word filters there are.

I have only the names phpbb had set already. I don't fear the bad languaage that much since my main target is made by serious web designers. They kinda behave themselves. As for the AOL type of writing, I had a kid doing that. After 2 messages on the board asking him to write in a "civilized" manner and a PM he's started writing better. I enforce a nice way to express and, althoug I make typos and some grammar mistake since I'm a Romanian keeping and English board, I do my best to write as good as I can. That's why I have the same expectations for the people writing on my forums.

We'll have to hear from them, but I would think a text file would be okay and useful. Plus it wouldn't get nailed by this boards filter.

Good idea, I didn't think about that.

Ah, another good idea. Multiple uses for the filter. cool.

I'm a bit concerned not on GeekFury so much, but on one of my other forums there may be issues.

Slight side-track, but does anybody allow the term 'gay' to describe something bad?

Just that, last year I had trouble with a member. He used it, and I edited it out and asked him not to use it again. He said it was ok because he was gay...

Good stuff guys. Also consider that if your site allows curse/bad words it is against most advertising agencies (including Google Adsense) TOS so you won't be able to earn much ad revenue.

Also remember you can use the swear filter to bleep out other things besides swear words too. Got a persistent spammer that floods your board with a certain URL or domain? Use the swear filter to block that domain and any variant they use. Trust me they get frustrated and go away as fast as they came

Hadn't thought about that idea! Thanks for the suggestion!

My board has the usual filter for vulgarity but I don't have too big a problem with spelling or grammar. In my board terms, I state that we expect proper English and all of us in Admin and Moderator positions make sure that we set an example. It's amazing to see that people will post messages on other boards using all sorts of "writing styles" but they will conform to the tone/style set on my board.

Never happened & I couldn't see my members doing that, but if it did ever happen I would act swiftly. I would personally find that extremely offensive.

I love the idea of filtering out SMS speak & excess use of exclamation marks, I'm going to "borrow" that idea for my own forums.

I've only censored two words. One which begins with "c" & one which begins with "f". I don't mind the odd swear word, as long as a post isn't peppered with it.

Well, I didn't use to censor it, because I just figured it was a lifestyle that some people lived, and though I didn't agree with it, I would respect it. However, not long ago, when some of my members would get in stupid little fights, they'd call eachother gay, and that pretty much pissed everyone off, so now I censor it.

I'm not sure whether I should do any censoring...
My forum is called Your-Zone and it's basically a "do what you want when you want as long at it's within rules" board... right now, I allow cursing but not abusive cursing... nor do I allow sexual talk. But, wouldn't censoring go against the whole theme of the board? And would my members be upset? (Most of my friends curse... and they always want to)

Personally I hate filters. If a forum has too extreme of one I skip it, otherwise I circumvent it. Personally, I've only ever censored the word K*ke because we used to get a few anti-semetic spammers. On my new site I expect it will be the same way.

As I am a Parent of 2 kids,I think censorship should be set by default on all forums..Yeah,yeah,yeah,I know,we're all adults and our kids here this stuff at school and otherwise.But while they're at my house,under my roof,They won't-it's called respect.
Or at least if it's a public forum it needs censorship.My kids play on the net everyday and If it weren't for the protection I have set-up on there computer,-I already know the things that would pop up from the words they type in.LOL
the internet is a good place for learning and fun,but also-it's bad to know that without the proper tools that my kids can't even pull up there favorite singers/actors due to the overwelming -well heck,you know what kind of sites I'm speaking of..LOL
Sorry-I strayed in a different direction..lol
Anyways,I use these words alot myself-( shouldn't,but I do )
but it doesn't mean I want my kids doing it-or reading it.I've seen too many kids here in town curse there parents out in public.(WRONG).
If I had done that as a kid-or even now,I wouldn't be able to sit down for a week-( ouch ).today they call that abuse-but I love my parents and respect them for doing that.How can that be abuse-I call it teaching manners.You have to let them know whats right and whats wrong..
Don't hate them----teach them.The goal of a parent is to raise your kids to be better people then we were - use our mistakes to try and make sure they don't make the same.

thanks for the list..............again

Really? I'm afraid you are going to have to get used to the idea that they aren't.

I detest swear filters as they invariably have unexpected side effects. Proper words get filtered because they have the relevant collection of letters within them (e.g. one forum I belonged to, the word "hearse" became "hearris" ffs!). I refuse to have mine switched on. I allow swearing and expect people to be reasonable about use of language. Interestingly, the "treat others as you would like to be treated" works exactly as expected.

I certainly won't censor my forum to fit in with others' expectations or because they have children that might see it. What your children see is your responsibility, not mine.

Yeah, and besides many words have different meanings in different contexts. A generic swear-word filter just won't help and might detract from genuine content.

That's at least my personal thing. If I find unacceptable language used, most likely we'll human-moderate on a case-by-case basis rather than just using a dumb computer blank out certain words.
